Your mother may care, but I don’t

Your mother may care if you’re behind schedule and haven’t completed the work on time. But, I don’t. I’m your client and my livelihood depends on the timely success of the project you promised me. Your mother may care if you don’t have enough time in the day to empower your people or learn how to be a better manager or leader. But I don’t. I’m your direct report and need you to be a great leader. I care about work and want to give my best. ...

It’s never just one little thing

That little extra bit around the waist or on your hips that just doesn’t go away. The one person on the team who isn’t quite the best fit. Those few items in the strategic plan that are a bit dubious. One or two things in your relationships that aren’t quite as good as you’d like them to be. Those times when you tell yourself: “It’s fine. I don’t mind. It’s not a big deal.” Those little things compromise your integrity.  In ...

Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

A young woman was lamenting to her mother about how hard life was for her. It seemed as soon as one problem was solved, a new one arose. She was so overwhelmed that she didn’t know how she was going to continue. Without saying a word, her mother  filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire until they came to a boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. In about twenty minutes she turned ...

Do you listen or just hear?

My 14 year old daughter has gone deaf. I don’t mean clinically or even functionally. I suspect it is more ontologically. She has willed herself to not hear anything she’s not interested in. Maybe it’s a teen phenomenon; however, I think it’s more of a human condition. We’re all a bit ontologically deaf. While we may physically hear what someone says to us, do we really listen? According to neuroscientists, we don’t. We only really pick up what we’re ...

Today’s impossible is tomorrow’s school project

In the 1960s, the idea of a computer in ones home wasn’t even on anyone’s radar. Touch screens, even more unlikely although the early versions were created around that time. Yesterday, my 11-year old daughter made a touch screen out of aluminum foil for a school science project. Remember, today’s impossible is tomorrows school project.

Anyone Can

If you ever thought that leadership was only for the select few, this story will change your mind. Lucia Kennedy is a 12-year old girl in Christchurch, New Zealand. Just a kid. Lucia believes that too many people leave their dreams unfulfilled. So she decided to set up a website for people to share their dreams. She’s also raising money to fund a coaching and mentoring service for kids to help them fulfill their dreams. Her website and charity is “Take a Chance On Your ...

Why congruent leaders excel

When my book launches in a few months, you’re going to hear a lot more about the importance of congruence in leadership. Why? Consider that those people whose values, interests and talents best match the work they do are more qualified, more willing to put in the extra effort and think more innovatively than those who are just going through the motions. When we love what we do, our work seems effortless. We willingly exert more effort in learning how to be better at what we do and ...

Being a True Leader

I remember when I first met Michael Luscombe at the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce lunch. As he spoke about leadership excellence, I noticed the people in the room leaning forward, hanging on his words. It wasn’t just because he was a great speaker. Michael spoke from the heart with the intention to share his truth in an honest reflection of what it takes to lead.  He shared his passion for the company as his professional family, and the ups and downs of his journey over ...

Find your genius

I just recently found an amazing book called “Born Genius” by Peter Barr. Over 15 years he formulated the ideas behind the thought that you must take a journey, real or imagined, to find your true self- which really is the source of discovering your own genius as a leader. Find out what it is that you truly love to do, match that with your real talents (not the ones you limit yourself to, but the full expression of your true potential), use the combination in ...

Lack of sleep makes you crazy and fat

It’s not just you, it’s anyone who isn’t getting the rest they need. Lack of adequate sleep has a real and measurable impact on our cognitive functions and emotional regulation. In addition, lack of sleep depresses our immune system, raises stress levels and, correspondingly, blood pressure. Even worse for anyone on a diet, lack of sleep wreaks havoc on our appetite and metabolism of glucose. Run yourself down enough and you’ll be at risk of developing pre-diabetic ...
